Derive is an Ethereum-based perp venue with portfolio margin, cross-asset collateral, and block/RFQ execution. This page evaluates the perpetuals workflow; the Derive options review owns strikes, expiry, premium, and options-specific settlement.
The useful question is whether you need those features for the position you plan to trade.
Derive fits perp traders who need shared collateral or structured execution
Use Derive’s perp product when you want perps in an account that also supports related products, shared collateral, or structured execution. It fits traders who can evaluate a portfolio-margin account rather than treating it as a simple isolated perp venue.
The broad product set also adds more rules to understand. It is not a simple perps venue.
Portfolio margin changes the capital question
Portfolio and cross-margin let related positions share collateral. This can reduce duplicated margin when the risk engine recognizes an offset.
It can also spread losses between positions. A hedge is not safe if collateral, liquidation rules, oracle inputs, or correlations differ from your model.
Block and RFQ execution can matter for larger perp flow
Derive highlights block RFQ execution for large trades and complex structures. For a perp trader, RFQ can provide a negotiated quote instead of relying only on public fills, but the exact quote and exit path still decide whether it is useful.
It is not automatically cheaper or safer. Compare the quote, collateral need, execution terms, and exit liquidity.
Fees and referrals are separate decisions
Derive’s fees can vary by product and user state, so check the live fee surface before trading. Its Help Center describes a referral program that pays 10% of referred users’ net fees in USDC, with monthly calculation and a stated fee cap per referral. Recheck those terms before sharing a referral link, and do not create trading activity solely to generate a reward.
Who Derive perps fit
Derive perps are worth investigating when you need cross-margin portfolio construction, multi-asset collateral, or block/RFQ execution and are prepared to model the associated margin, funding, and liquidation rules. Start with the Perp DEX Rankings, then compare the exact execution model and total cost before connecting a wallet.
When Derive is a poor fit
Skip Derive until you can explain the payoff, margin, expiry or funding exposure, settlement path, and collateral failure mode of the product you want to use. A broad product menu is not a substitute for a liquid market at your exact strike, expiry, size, or perp pair. If your actual job is basic spot swapping, a derivatives venue is the wrong starting point.
Risks specific to Derive
Derive adds derivatives risk to smart-contract, bridge, custody, and oracle risk. Cross-margin links positions through shared collateral.
Options add premium decay, implied volatility, expiry, and settlement risk. Perps add funding, leverage, and liquidation risk. RFQ trading depends on quote availability and liquidity-provider terms.
What to verify before trading
Check the live Derive product surface, current fees, the exact market and collateral list, the margin mode available to your account, and the referral program terms. Liquidity, execution, rewards, and returns are not guaranteed.
